Talking about/explaining the content of my songs has always been a source of awkwardness for me, mostly because I tend to wonder whether or not anyone will relate or find anything meaningful for themselves within it. To me, that is the ultimate goal of creating art. Alas, when writing the lyrics for this album I wanted to be honest. I’ve been honest in my writing before but usually about a pretty general subject. This time I’ve tried to narrow down a few specific inquiries/concepts that have been rattling around my head, troubling me for the past year. There’s the fear that your life’s work will never amount to anything regardless of the time and passion put in (yes, I know I’m still young— but currently I find no consolation in that fact). There’s a frustration of not being able to relate to or understand your peers. Some overall existential dread (actually a lot of that). The ebb and flow of people coming in and out of your life. I also tried to take a close look into my heart mirror and get to the bottom of what I maybe need to change and improve on, and what could have potentially lead me to this point— circumstance or my own doing? Both? Probably. But luckily, I don’t have to remain alone with these thoughts. Writing and recording this album was a great source of catharsis for me, and was about all I put my time into for about the last month and a half of 2018. Hopefully it can be a source of something positive for you too.
